Kypseli is a neighborhood in Athens, Greece, and is also the Greek word for beehive. We operate as a club of enthusiastic fans of traditional Greek folk music and dance. We are passionate about providing opportunities to dance together and enjoy many types of Greece's unique music.
A Kypseli group was formed after the Intersection, a club in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles run by Athan Karras and Rudy Dannes, closed its doors in 1985. The Intersection was a memorable place where many of us were first introduced to Greek dancing. It began in a small living space on Alvarado St. run by Louise (Anderson) Bilman.
Today Kypseli hosts special live music and D.J. dance events on a regular basis and brings both local talent as well as musicians and master teachers from Greece. We sponsor musicians who play a wide variety of specialized Greek repertoires, including rebetiko, laiko (pop), Pontiaka, nisiotiko (music of the islands), Epirotiko and more.
